Dear Future Adult – Senior Year Series – Part 3
Dear Future Adult
Have fun. Don’t get so serious that you miss out on the lighter side of life. Having fun will give you memories that will get you through heavy stuff later. Be a kid for as long as you can. Adulthood isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Yes, you can leave your laundry on the floor and no one will yell at you, but in the end, you still have to pick it up.
Go to the park and swing on the swings. Grab some chalk and color the world. Binge an entire series on TV. Just be carefree a little while longer. Once you graduate the world is yours, but so are the bills. Embrace your inner awkward child and don’t worry about being cool. It’s overrated and won’t make a difference in the future. Trust me some of the coolest adults were not cool in their youth.
Dear Parent of Future Adult
We have a huge responsibility in preparing our babes to be productive citizens of the world. That is scary, considering it was yesterday we were changing diapers. For just a little while longer it is okay to balance life lessons with fun.
Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it. Proverbs 22:6 (NIV)
Take the day off and go to the beach. Snuggle up and take in a movie marathon with your teenager. Before you know it, the house will be silent and clean and you will wonder where the time went. Make memories, now so you have them to reflect upon in the future.
Trip Down Memory Lane
Several years ago, I was having a serious discussion with young Emma about being responsible. I don’t recall the exact reason for the conversation, but I remember Emma bursting into tears and grabbing me. She sobbed into my shoulder, “Mommy I don’t ever want to grow up and leave you.” My heart swelled and I wished for that moment to last forever.
“When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child.” —Sophia Loren
