The BIG Event

If you haven’t heard The BIG Event is tomorrow in Bondurant. It’s time for the 10th Annual Bondurant St Baldrick’s Event!! If you know us, but don’t know what St Baldrick’s is then you don’t know us very well. We LOVE St Baldrick’s and our Bondurant crew!

My husband heard about this event in 2008 and it caught on, hook, line, and sinker. He told everyone and I mean everyone about it! He participated in Des Moines metro area events in 2008 and 2009. Then in 2010 St Baldrick’s landed in Bondurant and boy has this town turned it up for childhood cancer!

Our beloved St Baldrick’s crew has been getting the job done for 10 years in a row now. They step up every year not only planning and running this event, but they participate with a passion too! They are 100% genuine and have earned every bit of gratitude you can show them tomorrow!!  So please show up!!

St Baldrick’s is a fundraiser, but it’s not like other fundraisers. You don’t have to be physically fit to run, walk or ride bikes. You don’t have to get dressed up and listen to conversation while eating lukewarm food. Those are great and necessary fundraisers, but for St Baldrick’s all you have to do is have a good time. No kidding!!

Anyone can participate, old, young and anywhere in-between. Male, female, hairy or bald, that’s right hair challenged people find a way to participate too. Girls walk away with cute bob’s, the haircut not the boy, and a fantastic donation of hair to share.

It’s not just about cutting hair, that’s the gist, but there are very cool auction items to bid on in both silent and live. Who doesn’t love a good bidding war! It’s loud and often crowded, but amongst the sea of people, you will find hugs, tears, laughs and lots of fun!

When shavees walk on the stage it’s personal. It’s not just a shave or a donation it’s a piece of you, a piece of your heart. Hair grows back, but when a cancer warrior looks up and sees a room full of people shaving their heads, opening their wallets, while laughing and having a good time they know for a fact they are loved and never alone.

This is a kid-friendly event! My girls LOVE it! Emma has cut her hair three times and Ava did too, both intensely proud to be a part of St Baldrick’s! Ava held many hands on stage because she understood the value of a warm hand and a little smile. Both girls have also helped give a few haircuts too because they know the value of living in the moment. Where else can you see your neighbors and friends with insanely funny haircuts like reverse mohawks or a patchwork quilts?

You always know its spring in Bondurant when the boys turn up to school with their freshly shaved heads and a little pep in their step because they did something cool for a classmate. This event is a neat site to see, but the “why I shave” or “why I volunteer/donate” stories are the real mic drop. Some stories are shared others are not, but everyone has a story and that is why this event is IMPORTANT!

This event is serious fun for a serious cause! There’s not a lot of “serious” talking, just a lot of ACTION which is why this event is so successful. Everyone knows cancer is AWFUL, so we are DOING something about it! That being said there are facts that need to be shared about St Baldrick’s because even in all the FUN, mountains are being moved.

Did you know more children are lost to cancer in the U.S. than any other disease—in fact, more than many other childhood diseases combined? Worldwide, a child is diagnosed every 2 minutes.

There’s a huge gap in funding for our kids and St Baldrick’s is there to fill this gap.

St Baldrick’s
  • Our mission is to find cures for childhood cancers and to give survivors long and healthy lives.
  • We are the largest private (non-government) funder of childhood cancer research grants.
  • By funding cooperative research through the Children’s Oncology Group, we give kids nationwide access to the very latest in research and clinical trials.
  • Thanks to a grant review system that impresses the experts, we fund only the very best childhood cancer research.

St Baldrick’s is a Guide Star Gold participant. The expense ratios are 72% Program, 24% Fundraising, 4% Administration.

How is that possible?

St. Baldrick’s volunteer event organizers, shavees℠, barbers, sponsors, donors, staff, board members and other volunteers generate 100% of contribution revenues.

You read that right! This event is 100% volunteer driven!! That’s why we need YOU!!

Events are expensive and hard work, so when I say please come and show your support I mean it because it’s a BIG deal! Not only did your friends and neighbors (or really cool strangers) put their time and effort into this event they put their hearts and souls into it! They were touched and driven to make a difference and what a difference they make! Every – Single – Year – For – Ten – Years!!

Come tomorrow night to see what it’s all about! You will hear more about how St Baldrick’s and our town has turned up for childhood cancer in a very BIG way!!
