Low Carb and Clean

DIY Natural – Health and Beauty

DIY natural products is a quest of mine. Products that are easy to make, work well, have a decent shelf life and don’t break the budget are what I am aiming for. Here are a few favorites…

Immune booster – Apple Cider Vinegar

My daughter has been sick for about a week with congestion, cough, and general aches. Its one of those lingering annoying viruses that just drag you down. She won’t take the vinegar, in fact, pills and liquid medicines make her gag so she chooses to tough it out.

I, on the other hand, would rather nearly keel over from the nastiness of the vinegar then be sick for days on end. Monday night I had a dull headache, congestion was building in my sinuses and I had general body aches that typically signal a virus is setting in.

Before going to bed I downed a diluted shot of raw apple cider vinegar (affiliate link)and by morning the aches were gone. The congestion took a little longer to clear but it was gone by the time afternoon hit. I must have caught it in time for the symptoms to clear that fast.

I did this last winter when she was diagnosed with the flu. A friend gave me a bottle of flavored vinegar for her to try. I admit I was a bit skeptical. My daughter took one drink and that was it for her. I took a shot of it diluted with water daily for a few days and I never got sick. For as long as viruses exist I will have this immune booster on hand.

Natural Hand Scrub

Earlier this month I shared some woodcraft projects on Top Three Tuesday These projects involved a lot of painting and I am a very messy painter. My solution is a simple homemade 2 ingredient scrub. It not only gets the paint off but softens in the process.

Take a big scoop of coconut oil (affiliate link) and add some salt or sugar (affiliate links) until you get a gritty consistency. Now get to rubbing, the paint will come right off and wow they will be super soft! I rinse and dry and just like that clean and super soft hands! I have used this on my face and arms too when necessary and it is divine.

DIY Pore Mask

Blackheads on my nose are seriously annoying but the strips you buy are full of unknown ingredients…

  • INGREDIENTS. POLYQUATERNIUM-37, SILICA, WATERGLYCERIN, POLYSILICONE-13, PEG-12 DIMETHICONETITANIUM DIOXIDE, HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA (WITCH HAZEL) EXTRACT, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, STEARYL GLYCYRRHETINATE, METHYLPARABEN.

I make my own mask out of gelatin (affiliate link) and milk. Here is the link to the recipe I use.

I have used both Knox gelatin and beef gelatin and they work great! It’s not painful, but there is a bit of a sting. Whatever doesn’t peel off easily, just rinse away with water.
