What Holds You Together
What holds you together? Do you have a support network that you lean on or a hobby you run to when the world gets to be too much?
“I’m busy. Holding myself together with tape and glue.” Dr. Miranda Bailey- Grey’s Anatomy
I’m not always exactly sure what holds me together, sometimes it is someone, sometimes it is something. Most of the time I don’t realize I’m being held together until the seams start to peel away and I start to fall.
Yes, I admit it. I take for granted the support that I need to catch me. I don’t do this on purpose or consciously, but honestly, I am often only aware of the absence of support when I need it most.
Do you remember a time when you thought someone would be there and they weren’t? I do and it hurt. The real sting was realizing I had taken them for granted.
I didn’t account for the tailwind that was giving me the added velocity to make it on time. I took for granted the full moon on the darkest of nights. When we are down, our friends are our tailwind lifting and pushing. When we are sad, our family is the moon lighting the way. Why go through life pushing forward blindly?
Family, friends, faith, community, work, hobbies all of these things provide support in various ways, yet often are taken for granted. Living my best life means doing something every day to be AWARE and grateful for this support, like texting an old friend, picking up trash in the neighborhood, sharing a hobby, doing my best work, etc.
I can’t say I won’t ever take things for granted, but I am a work in progress. I am becoming aware.
